The School Counseling Program consists of four comprehensive areas:
CLASSROOM LESSONS:
Throughout the school year I will be coming into the classroom to teach lessons in all grades, K-5. Lessons are based on the TN State Board of Education School Counseling Model & Standards Policy, which is our curriculum standards. Knox County Elementary Counselors have put together a Curriculum Guide that we follow through the year that helps ensure that each standard is covered. These lessons can also be based on classroom needs including, but not limited to friendship skills, conflict resolution and study skills.
SMALL GROUP COUNSELING:
KCS Counselors are trained and willing to facilitate small student groups dealing with a wide range of issues. Small groups typically consist of anywhere between 3-6
students who meet once a week for about 6-8 weeks. A variety of topics can be addressed through these Small Groups. For example…divorce, study skills, anger management, friendship skills and classroom behavior.
INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING:
Individual visits with students occur probably the most frequently of the four areas. These visits can stem from a referral or a need that has been perceived and usually scheduled around the student’s academics. The goal of these visits is to reassure and validate the student, help the student finds way to deal with a situation or issue and to support them as they tackle their problem or situation.
CONSULTATION:
Consultation is a critical part of helping a student achieve success in Elementary School. This consultation piece occurs between parents, teachers, staff, outside agencies, former counselors or staff, and anyone else who might have beneficial information to help the student.
