THE HISTORY OF WEST HIGH SCHOOL
The history of West High School is a story of post-war prosperity, growth, westward expansion, and change! In the early 1950s, the Knoxville School Board closed the aging, overcrowded Knoxville High School, and built four new schools for a growing suburban population. Our beloved West High School was among the four new schools opened in 1951. We’ve grown tremendously since our first graduating class (1952) of about 100 students. We have yearbooks dating back to 1953 in the school library. If you’d like to see one of our wonderful annuals, just ask at the circulation desk and we’ll be happy to share them with you. Because these books are one of a kind historical records we can’t let them leave the library.
