The Bertelkamp Center for Academic Excellence is a tremendous asset to the success of our students here at Bearden High School. All students may utilize Bertelkamp tutoring. All BHS student-athletes who have a class average of an “F” at the end of each 4 1/2 week grading period will be required to regularly attend Bertelkamp Tutoring in the mornings and/or afternoons before and/or after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Student-athletes must attend Bertelkamp a minimum of two days each week until they pull their grade up to passing.ALL STUDENTS ARE WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND BERTELKAMP IF THEY WOULD LIKE TUTORING ASSISTANCE.Attendance: Tuesday & Thursday 7:30am to 8:15am and/or 3:45pm to 4:30pm
- Student-athletes are required to attend both days of tutoring per week. However, they only need to attend two of the four tutoring sessions to fulfill the mandatory attendance requirements of Bertelkamp Tutoring.
- Student-athletes will not be eligible to participate in any athletic contest each week he/she does not meet the attendance requirements.
- Special needs situations regarding attendance will be handled on a case-by-case basis through the Athletic Director.
Check-in daily with Mr. McHardy in room 414 in the morning and afternoon for attendance purposes. After checking in with Mr. McHardy, the student will be directed to the room where he/she will work on their assignment/s and receive assistance as needed. Any student-athlete that does not arrive by 7:30 am and/or 3:45 pm each day will not be given credit for that day, but they will be allowed to stay and receive assistance. Once an athlete has improved their grade to a “D,” the athlete will no longer be required to attend the Bertelkamp Tutoring.
*Athletes must submit a release form, from the appropriate teacher (class/es they are failing) to Mr. McHardy and/or Mr. Balcom once he/she is no longer required to attend Bertelkamp Tutoring. If Mr. McHardy and/or Mr. Balcom do not receive a note from the teacher clearing the athlete from the role sheet, the athlete will be marked absent and will be subject to attendance consequences. Mr. McHardy and/or Mr. Balcom will provide release forms for teachers to sign when requested by a student-athlete.
Student-athletes are expected to take full responsibility for their actions and education. They will receive one prompt/warning for inappropriate behavior per day before being removed and losing an attendance credit.
