  • School Bus Safety Week Overview

Held during the third full week of October each year, National School Bus Safety Week is an active and evolving public education program and an excellent way for parents, students, teachers, motorists, school bus operators, school administrators and other interested parties to join forces and address the importance of school bus safety.

Check out the resources on the right side of this page and the tips for riders and drivers below. Also please familiarize yourself with the laws regarding when to stop for school buses.
  • Did You Know?
    • On a four lane road without a raised or grassy median, when a bus stops and you see the yellow flashing lights and the flashing stop sign, no matter what lane you are in, you have to stop too.

    • On a two lane road when a school bus stops and you see the flashing stop sign, it doesn’t matter what direction you’re going, you have to stop too.

    • When a school bus turns on its flashing yellow lights it is preparing to stop. You should be alert for children and be prepared to stop too.

    • As you approach a stopped school bus loading or unloading children and you are not separated by a physical divider (like grassy median or concrete barrier), you must stop.

    • When you see a school bus stop and the lights flashing with the stop sign activated, you must stop on red.
