Eighth Grade Mathematics Curriculum Overview

  • The Knox County Schools Mathematics program implements a comprehensive, research-based approach to learning mathematics.  Our curriculum is carefully aligned with the Tennessee State Standards for Mathematics.  An overview of the modules being taught this year can be found below.

8th Grade Pre-Algebra is a rigorous course designed to prepare students for the Algebra I curriculum. Students use linear functions, linear equations, and system of equations to represent, analyze, and solve a variety of problems. Students extend their understanding of slope as a constant rate of change and use slope to analyze situations and solve problems. They apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances between points in the coordinate plane to measure lengths and analyze polygons and polyhedral.

    Unit topics include:

    • Rigid Transformations
    • Dilations, Similarity, and Introducing Slope
    • Linear Relationships
    • Linear Equations and Systems
    • Functions and Volume
    • Association in Data
    • Exponents and Scientific notation
    • Pythagorean Theorem and Irrational Number
